Terminated employees and union leaders in Grameenphone vs Telenor ASA

The complaint was submitted by 21 terminated employees and trade union leaders of Grameenphone in Bangladesh.

The Complainants allege that Telenor ASA has failed to observe the recommendations of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct (the Guidelines) with respect to risk-based due diligence, use of leverage and ethical oversight of its subsidiary Grameenphone.

The complaint relates to the following chapters of the Guidelines: General Policies (Chapter II), Human Rights (Chapter IV), and Employment and Industrial Relations (Chapter V).

NCP Norway has decided to accept parts of the complaint for further examination. This concerns terminations allegedly linked to trade union activities and the right to an effective remedy. The NCP has decided not to examine the part of the complaint concerning payments under the Workers’ Profit Participation Fund.

The NCP has at this stage made no assessment as to whether the company has observed the Guidelines.
